Folks over at iFixit have been quite busy lately considering the number of devices released over the last month. Now, Apple’s comparatively low-cost iPhone XR has made it out into the wild. iFixit got its hands on the device to take it apart to give us a peek on what Apple has jam-packed inside the device. There are various aspects covered, so let’s see some more details on the teardown and how different it is from the iPhone XS and the previous models.
iPhone XR Teardown Reveals A Bigger Battery Cell Than The iPhone XS But Smaller than The XS Max
Opening up the iPhone XR is pretty similar to the iPhone X as Apple uses its standard Pentalobe screws. According to iFixit, the screws don’t match the color of the device and the SIM card tray is also lower than that of the iPhone XS and it is modular which is the first for an iPhone. This makes it faster to swap a dead SIM reader and results in lower cost when replacing the logic board.

Upon opening the device, it is clear where iPhone XS received its IP68 water resistance rating from even though the iPhone XR and iPhone XS are pretty similar when it comes to opening the device. iFixit says that the iPhone XR are internals look like they are a hybrid of the iPhone 8 and iPhone X. The logic board and the battery are rectangular in shape.
Speaking of battery, the iPhone XR features an 11.16 Wh battery cell compared to the iPhone XS’s 10.13 Wh. However, it is smaller than that of the iPhone XS Max with 12.08 Wh. Due to a lower resolution display and the 7nm 12 Bionic chip, the iPhone XR will deliver much better battery life out of the latest models.

Taptic Engine is included which provides Haptic feedback when a press and hold gesture is performed. The Haptic Touch feedback is implemented instead of the 3D Touch display. It also features a single lens camera module. The TrueDepth Camer setup is the same one as found on the iPhone X and iPhone XS.
The teardown also reveals that the LCD display is bigger, thicker and heavier than the OLED panel on the iPhone XS. It has some weight to it due to the fact that the LCD display requires a backlight. Due to the larger display, the Lightning connector is off-axis. Apple has incorporated the same copper wireless charging coil as found on the iPhone XS and XS Max.
iFixit has awarded the iPhone XR with a repairability score of six which is better than that of the Google Pixel 3 XL’s repairability score of 4. The display can be replaced easily but the process becomes difficult due to waterproofing and the Pentalobe screws. Check out the video below for more details.
