Sea of Thieves’ Shrouded Spoils Update Drops Next Month, Adds Fog, More Ship Customization

These days most games try to avoid fog as much as possible, but the next Sea of Thieves update is embracing it. Per Rare’s latest dev diary, Sea of Thieves’ Shrouded Spoils update will add roving fog banks, which can strike at any moment and make navigation a rather tricky affair. You can get more details below.

Here’s how Sea of Thieves executive producer Joe Neate describes the fog mechanic:

“One thing we’re introducing in the Shrouded Spoils update is fog. This is something that can roll in at any time, and it really obstructs the vision for the player. It makes visibility a lot harder, but it makes the crow’s nest a really important part of the experience. Climbing up into the crow’s nest, you have an opportunity to look out over the bank of fog and see things in the distance, making it a vital part of ship navigation. Anything, islands and rocks and stuff, becomes a lot more treacherous. It’s going to be eerie — the audio team has done a great job of upping the creaks and noise of your ship you hear when you’re sailing through the fog.”

In addition to fog, Shrouded Spoils will include a grab-bag of other features added in response to player feedback. Ship customization will be expanded, with players being able to tweak their wheels, cannons, capstans, and more, and Pirate Legends are getting new, exclusive Commendations.

It doesn’t sound like Shrouded Spoils will be quite as exciting as Forsaken Shores – more a housekeeping update, but Rare is promising their next update after Shrouded Spoils will be another big one. More details about that update will be revealed at Microsoft’s big X018 event on November 10.

Sea of Thieves is currently available on PC and Xbox One. The Shrouded Spoils update is scheduled to drop sometime in November.
