Nintendo Switch Online Adds Special Versions of Metroid and Dr. Mario, 3 Other Classics

Nintendo Switch Online has added three new 8-bit classics to its NES lineup, and updated another two with more user-friendly “SP” versions. As you may recall, back in October Nintendo released The Legend of Zelda – Living the Life of Luxury, a special edition of the classic NES game that lets players start the game with a pile of rupees and handy items. Now they’re doing something similar with Metroid and Dr. Mario.

The SP version of Metroid unlocks all of Samus’ abilities and starts you mid-way through the game (shortly before the battle with Ridley). Meanwhile, Dr. Mario SP starts you at level 20 at Hi speed, giving you a chance to see parts of the game most players have never experienced. The SP editions are a nice way to make Nintendo’s classics a little more approachable – hopefully more of them are in the works.

Meanwhile, Nintendo is also adding Ninja Gaiden, Wario’s Woods, and Adventures of Lolo to the Switch Online lineup. Ninja Gaiden is, of course, one of the most infamously difficult, yet satisfying, action-platformers of all time, Wario’s Woods is an underrated falling-block puzzler, and Adventures of Lolo is an early gem from Kirby develoeprs HAL Laboratory. All three are definitely worth your time if you’re in the mood for some retro fun.

Ninja Gaiden, Wario’s Woods, and Adventures of Lolo join 26 other Switch Online NES games, including Metroid, Mighty Bomb Jack, TwinBee, Balloon Fight, Baseball, Donkey Kong, Double Dragon, Dr. Mario, Excitebike, Ghosts ‘n Goblins, Gradius, Ice Climber, Ice Hockey, Mario Bros., NES Open Tournament Golf, Pro Wrestling, River City Ransom, Soccer, Solomon’s Key, Super Dodge Ball, Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Tecmo Bowl, Tennis, The Legend of Zelda, and Yoshi.

Nintendo Switch Online will set you back $4 a month, and a mere $20 for a full year. A Family Membership, which lets you share your account with up to 7 other people, will cost you $35 a year. In addition to its collection of NES games, the service also includes cloud saves, special offers, and, of course, online play for compatible games.
