Samsung Upcoming Foldable Galaxy F Reportedly Getting Two Batteries Equaling 6,000mAh, With a Hefty Memory Configuration

Although Samsung has demoed a working prototype of its much-awaited folding Galaxy F (it might also be called the Galaxy Fold), it was revealed that the company might only make one million units of the phone initially to gauge response. However, if a recent report from the research firm CGS-CIMB Group is to go by, the form factor will take off by the year 2020 and revive the stagnant smartphone market.

CIMB Estimates Foldable Smartphones to Have a Market Share of 9.2 Percent by 2020

According to CIMB, 4 million foldable smartphones would be shipped globally next year and the figure will increase to 39 million units by 2022. In terms of market share, foldable smartphones will go from accounting for 1.3 percent of handsets in 2019 to 9.2 percent in 2020.

The group believes that Samsung’s Galaxy F might be launched alongside the Galaxy S10 in February 2019. If that doesn’t happen, the device will be revealed soon afterward. Either way, Samsung’s Galaxy F could be the first foldable smartphone in the market. It is expected to cost $1,800, enabling the South Korea behemoth to pocket a gross profit margin of 65 percent. The report also says that by 2020, the average price of foldable phones would fall down to $1,300.

Apart from that, the report has also shed light on some of the key specifications of the phone. It is expected to have one battery in each compartment, providing a combined power of 5,000mAh to 6,000mAh. The Galaxy F is expected to feature a dual rear camera system (12MP + 12MP) and an 8MP selfie shooter. The US-bound variant of the phone will be underpinned by the Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform, while other models will rock the Exynos 9820 chipset. The phone is expected to come with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal memory.

The report also says that in the future, we may see foldable smartphones with a 7-inch display that can be expanded up to a 12-inch screen when three separate displays are employed. Samsung is expected to lead the foldable display market until 2020, and LG will not be able to catch up anytime soon. Apart from Samsung, Huawei and LG are expected to release foldable smartphones in the first half of 2019, followed by Xiaomi, Vivo, OPPO, and Motorola in the second half of 2019. Microsoft and Apple are expected to release their foldable devices in 2020.
