AMD Ryzen 3000 Series Based Notebooks Now Available – ASUS TUF Gaming Models With Ryzen 5 3550H CPUs

AMD announced their latest Ryzen 3000 series mobility processors, codenamed Picasso, at CES 2019. Featuring a total of 6 Ryzen SKUs, two A-Series SKUs, and a single Athlon SKU, the lineup is more of a refresh based on the Zen+ cores and as such, are based on the 12nm process node instead of the 14nm node that was utilized by the Raven Ridge lineup (Ryzen 2000 series mobile).

Now ASUS has finally introduced their TUF Gaming notebooks based on the Ryzen 3000 series CPUs which include the FX705 and the FX505. Both models feature the Ryzen 5 3550H processor which is a quad-core model with eight threads clocked at 2.1 GHz base and 3.7 GHz boost clocks. The chip has 4 MB of L3 and 2 MB of L2 cache while for graphics, it utilizes the Vega 8 GPU that is configured with 512 stream processors and runs at a clock speed of 1200 MHz. The chip comes in at a TDP of 35W and is a really good boost over its predecessor. Of course, those looking for high-end models would have to wait but AMD also has the higher end Ryzen 7 3000 series CPUs that feature clocks up to 4.0 GHz and Vega 10 iGPUs with 640 stream processors. Following are the full specifications of AMD’s Ryzen 3000 series notebook lineup.

AMD Ryzen 3000 / Athlon 300 / A-Series Family Specifications (2019):

So coming back to the models, the TUF Gaming FX705 is a 17.3″ notebook that packs an IPS display with AMD Freesync technology The screen has bezels that measure 6.5 mm from the sides. In addition to the built-in Vega 10 graphics, the notebook also comes with the AMD Radeon RX 560X with 4 GB of GDDR5 VRAM and up to 1024 stream processors if this is based on the higher-end 560X SKU (14 CU variant also exists). There’s memory support for up to 32 GB DDR4 SO-DIMMs. Storage is offered through a 1 TB SSH (5400 RPM), 1 TB SATA HDD (5400 RPM) and you can also go for a high-end PCIe Gen 3 SSD (up to 512 GB).

The TUF Gaming FX505, on the other hand, comes with a 15.6″ display featuring the same display technology. This model is offered in 60 Hz (Non-Freesync) or 120 Hz (Freesync variants). Rest of specifications are similar to the FX705 with the same dedicated RX 560X graphics card. According to Computerbase, the ASUS TUF Gaming FX705 would retail at 799 Euros while the FX505 will be retailing at 699 Euros.

“AMD’s Ryzen processors have taken desktops by storm, and TUF Gaming laptops lead the deployment of the newest version. Otherwise known as Picasso, this 2nd Gen Ryzen Mobile APU is built with industry-leading 12nm technology. The Ryzen 5 3550H chip powering FX505DY and FX705DY boasts four cores and eight threads that deliver capable performance for popular games and everyday work. Multithreaded performance is particularly strong, yet the processor fits into a 35W power envelope that doesn’t compromise battery life.

Vega-based integrated graphics allow the APU to power the laptop all on its own, which helps conserve power and extend battery life to over seven hours of 1080p video playback on FX705DY and nearly six hours on FX505DY. Discrete GPUs are where it’s at for proper gaming so when it’s time to play, AMD Switchable Graphics tech automatically activates the laptop’s discrete Radeon RX 560X. The GPU pumps out smooth frame rates in mainstays like Fortnite and Overwatch, as well as esports classics like League of Legends and Dota 2.”

To be honest, the notebooks at these prices definitely sound like a great deal. You get combined power of Zen+ cores with a capable 1080p graphics card and if the dedicated card is not in use, the notebook will switch over to the Vega iGPU, hence saving battery power. It’s is products like these that are helping AMD gain market share across the board as revealed in a recent report which we covered here.
