We all forget something at some point, which is why the ability to set reminders on our smartphone is quintessential. But, now that we have a dozen or so smart objects, including speaking kitchen appliances, it is only fair that we should have the ability to set reminders on those devices as well. The Google Home range of speakers was toted to make your domestic life easier, and it wouldn’t be very good at it if it lacked the ability to remind you of stuff. There were a few hiccups along the path to get reminders to work on Google Home speakers, but that’s a thing of the past now. Now, you can set location-based reminders using your Google Home speakers, according to a Tweet by Google.

A location-based reminder is triggered, as the name indicates when you’re at a certain location. To set a location-based reminder, simply tell the Google Assistant to remind you something when you’re at the location. An example would be, “Hey Google, remind me to pick up milk when I’m at the store.” Because this is location-based, you won’t be notified on Google Home. Instead, you get the reminders on your phone as you reach the store. You can set one time reminders and recurring ones as well. Needless to say, you will need to have location services enabled on your smartphone for the notification to trigger.
You can specify a particular location or something more general. For example, “Hey Google, remind me to pick up some bacon at Wal Mart” will trigger a notification only when you’re around a Wal Mart, while “Hey Google, remind me to pick up flowers from the florist” will trigger when you’re near any florist. The feature is neat and might help you catch up on things that you’ve been putting off for weeks. It can also be used to set reminders not related to shopping, for example, “Hey Google, remind me to drop the cheque off at the bank.” The feature is available only in the US for now and will be rolled out across other markets eventually.
