OnePlus 6 DxOmark Review Has A 96 Point Score, With Mixed Performance

It’s been a tough first half of 2018 for Android and especially for Samsung as the company’s Galaxy S9 lineup isn’t punching in the numbers for market share. We’ve seen a handful of gadgets so far, from LG, Samsung, OnePlus and ASUS – all of which feature the same combination of specifications and a sprinkling of differentiation features on top.

Out of these, the OnePlus 6 has demonstrated mixed performance as the company continues its tradition of bringing down flagship level hardware specifications down to a semi-affordable level. While the OnePlus 6 isn’t free from problems of its own, it’s still slightly relevant to cut the company some slack. Today we’ve got the complete DxOmark review for the OnePlus 6. Take a look below for more details.

The OnePlus 6 Scores 96 Points In DxOmark As It Displays Strong Performance In Several Test Categories But Lags Behind Severely In Others

As you most likely know, DxOmark’s camera tests are quite extensive as they test out nearly every aspect of a camera’s performance. The OnePlus 6 is tested across nine different metrics. These are:

  • Exposure Contrast
  • Color
  • Autofocus
  • Texture
  • Noise
  • Artifacts
  • Flash
  • Zoom
  • Bokeh

We’ll evaluate these in groups of three, starting off from the metrics of strongest performance for the OnePlus 6. All credit goes to the good folks over at DxOmark for their hard work and extensive tests. So let’s start!

OnePlus 6 DxOmark Review: Strong Performance In Exposure, Flash, And Autofocus Tests

The top three categories for the OnePlus 6’s rear camera performance are Exposure/Contrast, Flash, And Autofocus. The highest score in all tests for the OnePlus 6 is in AutoFocus, where the device scores a full 100 points. The OnePlus 6’s Autofocus triggers within 500ms after defocusing, making it one of the top smartphones in the category.

Scores for Exposure/Contrast and Flash are in a tie with 89 points for each. In tests of Exposure, the OnePlus 6 performs well in both outdoor and indoor scenarios. However, the device does not accurately capture details in areas where backlighting is brighter in the background than in the foreground. The smartphone also performs adequately in low-light scenarios, capturing good amounts of light.

In Flash, the OnePlus 6 performs satisfactorily and manages to avoid several pitfalls associated with the artificial burst of light. With a score of 89, it’s not perfect but gets the job done. You can take a look at a camera sample gallery above to ascertain for yourself.

OnePlus 6 DxOmark Review: Modest Performance In Color, Artifacts, Texture, And Noise Tests

Out of these three, the OnePlus 6 performs the best in Color tests with a score of 83. As you can see in the images above, the OnePlus 6 produces fantastic images that portray an accurate balance and brightness of colors. However, when DxOmark compared the smartphone with others, a slight pink hue visible in the outdoor images. Head over to the review to take a look at it.

In Artifacts, the smartphone manages to keep most inconsistencies at bay, scoring 75 points. Some of the problems in this test include flare in images with bright backgrounds and noise patterns in images with consistent backgrounds.

Moving towards Texture, the OnePlus 6 performs adequately in sufficient light, but results start to display detail degradation. As the graph above demonstrates, performance in this segment is similar to Samsung’s Galaxy S9+. Finally, Noise reduction in low-light is similar to levels in bright light with the OnePlus 6 beating the iPhone X but not the Galaxy S9+ with a score of 68 points.

OnePlus 6 DxOmark Review: Weak Performance In Zoom, Satisfactory In Bokeh

Moving to our final two metrics, the OnePlus 6 matches Google’s Pixel 2 in Bokeh results, with a score of 55 points. The device only applies bokeh to the background and isn’t consistent across some of the details.

Zoom is the poorest performing category for the OnePlus 6 as both of its dual-camera lenses have a focal length of 27mm. This affects detail capture, particularly when compared to other gadgets. The smartphone has a score of 35 points for Zoom.
