A newly published report suggests that the HomePod is set to receive the iOS 12 update later this fall with significant new features.

At WWDC 2018, Apple didn’t say a word regarding software updates for the HomePod. But a report published by iGeneration [Google Translate link] suggests that the Cupertino giant is currently working on an iOS 12 update for its smart speaker and also reports that the software is currently in beta and is being internally tested at Apple.

According to the report, the new update will allow the speaker to do more than just play tunes from Apple Music or do a bunch of Siri tricks. It will allow users to make and receive phone calls, which means that HomePod will have complete access to the user’s contacts. Currently, if you like to make a call, you have to initiate everything from your iPhone and then transfer it to your HomePod. With the new update, you can kick things off using the HomePod itself. Pretty neat.
Furthermore, the new update will also allow users to check their voicemail straight from the HomePod. This is something which you can’t do at all, and I’m certain this feature will go down well with users who rely on voicemail a lot.
To wrap things up, the new iOS 12 software update will also users to set multiple timers using the HomePod, use Find My iPhone and allow the speaker to move between wireless networks as long as your iPhone knows the password to the network you’re heading to.

Now, the things is, this software is being tested internally and there’s no telling what sort of changes it will further go through before it is released to the public later this fall.
