Blackout Will Have Balanced Vehicles Across Sea, Land and Air, Says Black Ops 4 Dev

Speaking with PC Gamer at Gamescom 2018, Treyarch’s director of communications John Rafacz talked about vehicles in the Blackout (Battle Royale inspired) mode for the upcoming game Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. According to Rafacz, all vehicles will be balanced, whether they’re sea vehicles, land vehicles or air vehicles.

There’s a range of vehicles that I think are well-balanced to match with the on-foot combat. It isn’t like you’re driving a tank, trying to fight against a dude with a scavenged submachine gun. They’re all well-balanced. We’ve been having a lot of playtests at Treyarch over the last several months getting ready for this, and it’s a blast to play. It feels great. It feels like Black Ops.

With regards to the Blackout map, some fans have expressed concerns since the developers said its layout would feature bits from all the most popular maps mixed together. Treyarch addressed that in the interview.

It’s easy to understand why people see it as a patchwork, but all of the maps are built seamlessly together. The environments are all inspired by classic maps, and you’ll see moments from Firing Squad and Nuketown in there, but it’s not like we just dropped them right next to each other and glued them together. It is still very much an environment build for Black Ops.

John Rafacz

It’s an extremely coherent presentation, but on top of that it’s ten years of heritage of Black Ops put together, through weapons, characters, environments, vehicles—land, sea and air. There’s a lot there to dig if you’re a Black Ops fan.

The Blackout beta is coming on September 10th for PlayStation 4 users and September 14/15th (depending if you have pre-ordered or not) on PC.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is due for release on October 12th for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. For more on the PC version, you can check our previous report and today’s new trailer.
