Street of Rage 4 to Revive the Bodacious Sega Genesis Brawler Franchise

Dig up your favorite pair of acid-wash jeans and drop some rockin’ tunes into your Walkman, because it’s time to take to the streets once again. Streets of Rage 4, the first new entry in Sega’s beloved brawler franchise in 24 years, is being developed by Lizardcube, who worked on the well-received Wonder-Boy: The Dragon’s Trap, and Guard Crush Games, who made the throwback brawler Streets of Fury. Sounds like the project is in appropriate hands. Check out the first trailer for Streets of Rage 4, below.

Bitchin’! Slick new visuals aside, it doesn’t look like Lizardcube and Guard Crush are messing with the Streets of Rage formula too much, which is probably the right way to go as the original trilogy were some of the best brawlers of all time. Featuring hand-drawn visuals from the team behind 2017’s gorgeous Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap remake, Streets of Rage 4 builds upon the classic trilogy’s gameplay with new mechanics, a fresh story and a gauntlet of dangerous stages with a serious crime problem. Streets of Rage 4 recalls classic gameplay but it stands as an entirely original arcade-style romp thanks to the expertise of Guard Crush Games and Dotemu. Whether players gang up with a friend or clean up the city solo, Streets of Rage 4 is a skull-bashing, chicken-chomping delight all set to a thumping soundtrack sure to get your blood pumping.

What do you think? Eager to get your knuckles bloody again? Or has the side-scrolling brawler’s time come and gone? I was a big fan of the original games, and Street of Rage 4’s art looks fantastic (particularly that badass new Blaze design), so I’m on board!

Platforms and a release date for Streets of Rage 4 have yet to be announced.
