Amazon leaked names and email addresses of some of its customers due to what the company calls a “technical error.” The error apparently made customer details visible publicly on the company’s website.
The ecommerce giant has declined to comment on how many users have been affected. The emails it has been sending to the affected customers simply say that the exposure happened due to a technical problem and that the customers aren’t to blame. The email reads:

Hello,
We’re contacting you to let you know that our website inadvertently disclosed your email address due to a technical error. The issue has been fixed. This is not a result of anything you have done, and there is no need for you to change your password or take any other action.
Amazon has assured that neither its website nor any of its systems have been breached and that the issue has been fixed and the company has “informed customers who may have been impacted.”
The company has avoided sharing any other details of what this technical error was and it appears everyone will have to trust the firm when it says there hasn’t been any breach and that the issue has been fixed. It is important to recall that there have been reports of an employee who was fired after they sold customer email addresses to a third-party seller on the platform.
Reports had suggested (paywall) that Amazon was investigating data leaks by employees in exchange for bribes from third-party sellers. However, it remains unclear if the “technical error” is in any way related to that particular practice.
