Anthem Shows Off Open-World Freeplay Exploration in 8 Minutes of New Footage

With the release of Anthem just a bit over a month away, BioWare has opened the gameplay floodgates, although most of what we’ve seen has been taken from the game’s missions. That’s all fine and good, but a good RPG also needs to allow its players just chill out and explore its world without any particular objective in mind. Well, fret not, because Anthem lets you do just that.

The latest batch of Anthem footage from IGN shows off the game’s Freeplay mode, which sets you and your co-op buddies loose in the world to get into trouble as you see fit.  When out in Freeplay, you can take on World Events (simple missions that will be randomized each time you go out), battle wild alien fauna, and even the occasional miniboss, and collect gear, crafting materials, codexes with information about the world, and other goodies. You can check it all out, below.

I have to say, I like what I’m seeing! Anthem’s Freeplay actually kind of reminds me of Nintendo’s Xenoblade Chronicles series, particularly Xenoblade Chronicles X. That’s a big compliment, by the way. Hopefully Anthem’s open world has the depth to support a lot of exploration for those who perhaps aren’t as into the game’s more structured missions.

An Anthem demo is set to drop in a few weeks. Origin/EA Access members will be able to play the demo on January 25, while everybody else will be able to give the game a spin on February 1. The demo will let players try out two Javelin classes (the Ranger and another unannounced one), explore the Fort Tarsis hub, and take on a small handful of missions. Players will start at level 10 and progress to level 15.

Anthem boosts onto PC, Xbox One, and PS4 on February 22, 2019.
