Apple’s Upcoming A13 Chipset Codename Allegedly Revealed – 7nm FinFET Node Expected to Be Retained [Update]

Apple’s A12 Bionic that fuels the 2018 iPhone lineup, and A12X Bionic that underpins the new iPad Pro models have been both hailed as powerful SoCs that can give laptop manufacturers a run for their money. With that feat accomplished, new information has started to surround the A13 already. A well-known tipster who dives deep into codes recently took to Twitter to shed some light on the Apple A13 chip, but core details are still not known, which was expected.

A Variation of the A13 Chip Might Power Apple’s Laptops, According to a Chinese Report

Per Longhorn, the A13 is being called ‘Lighting’ and bears the model number T8030. Longhorn has a good track record when it comes to Apple so when he comes across something new, it is important that we should listen. Apparently, the next-gen chip will feature something called hardware tracing, but he isn’t sure what AFT (Apple Filing Protocol) would be used for. According to a report from Leikeji, Apple might even make a customized version of the A13 chip for the Mac series.

As the A12X Bionic’s performance has shown, the chip can easily take on the more powerful notebooks. This builds upon a previous report from industry insiders who claimed that industry bigwigs are making 7nm chips of their own to fuel slim notebooks and these might be released as early as next year, with MediaTek, Huawei, and Samsung all taking a keen interest in this market.

iOS and macOS aren’t all that different as they share some of the code and are both based on Unix so it shouldn’t be difficult for the Cupertino giant to make macOS run on the ARM architecture. Compared to the iPad Pro, which has its own limitations, a powerful chip that succeeds the A12X Bionic would be more apt for a notebook. Such a chip would also offer increased battery life and efficiency, and possibly faster internet speeds. We might see the chip powering the slimmest MacBook in the future.

Right now, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 850 mobile platform powers Windows 10 notebook and unfortunately, it does not even come close to the performance of the A12 Bionic.
