It’s taken nearly three years, but Microsoft is finally making the original Crackdown playable via Xbox One Backward Compatibility. Why such a long wait for a first-party published title? Microsoft hasn’t provided any explanation (perhaps they were hoping to release it alongside Crackdown 3), but the wait may end up being worth it as Crackdown is enhanced for Xbox One X.
Most backward compatible Xbox 360 games play exactly as they did on the original hardware, but a select few have added Xbox One X features, including increased resolution and pixel count. On top of Crackdown, Microsoft is also adding The Witcher 2, Fable Anniversary, and Forza Horizon to the “Xbox 360 games enhanced for Xbox One X” collection. The list also includes Assassin’s Creed, Fallout 3, Gears of War 3, Halo 3, Mirror’s Edge, Oblivion, and Skate 3.

Microsoft has also added some simple new graphics options for enhanced Xbox 360 games. You can now choose to turn off the fancy new Xbox One X visuals in order to optimize performance. Here’s how you access the settings:
- Press “View” and “Menu” buttons on the controller to pull up the Xbox 360 guide
- Navigate to “Settings” blade
- Select “Xbox One X Settings”
- Select to optimize for “Graphics” or “Performance”
Simple! Xbox One Backward Compatibility currently includes over 460 Xbox 360 games (11 of which are Xbox One X enhanced) and 13 original Xbox games. According to Microsoft, over 860 million hours of Xbox 360 games have been played on Xbox One. That sounds like a big number, but it’s been found most Xbox One owners ignore the feature. Despite that, Microsoft insists they’re sticking with backward compatibility as “preserving the art form of video games is part of our DNA.”
