Take the clean install route only if you are facing a lot of problems with your current installation of macOS. If everything is running smoothly then installing the update over the air is absolutely fine. You will see some performance related differences if your Mac is very, very old and hasn’t seen a fresh install in quite some time.
Given that we are far away from WWDC 2018, therefore it’s safe to say that we will see quite a few updates to macOS High Sierra. Just make sure that you are ready to install them as they arrive. After all, you do want your Mac to function to the top of its capabilities, don’t you?
