The questionnaire began by stating that “a wide variety of topics and behaviours” may appear on the social network giant Facebook’s platform. So the social network giant Facebook asked how the user would deal if they had to define social network policies for the following situation: “a private message in which an adult man asks for abusive pictures of a 14-year-old girl.”
One of the pre-defined responses was “this content should not be allowed on Facebook and no one should be able to view it” but there was also the option “this content should be allowed on Facebook and I would not mind seeing it”.
The social network giant Facebook also asked who should decide the rules, if the request for nudes was allowed or not. The options were: “Facebook users decide by voting,” “External experts decide and tell Facebook,” “Facebook decides the rules together with external experts,” or “Facebook decides the rules on its own.”
At no time the social network giant Facebook seems to take into consideration that requesting pornographic images for a child is against the law and totally wrong. And in the second question, there is neither the possibility of answering that legal authorities or child protection bodies should be involved in the case, for example.
After the questionnaire became public, the social network giant Facebook took questions off the air and stressed that it has always banned the exploitation of minors on the platform, not intending to change its policy. In a statement, the company says “this kind of activity is and always will be completely unacceptable on Facebook. This should not have been part of the research. It was a mistake”.
