Today truly marks the end of an era for Final Fantasy XV and its long development. Around two years after the game’s original release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Square Enix confirmed that director Hajime Tabata has left the company.
Hajime Tabata’s departure has been announced during a livestream celebrating the game’s second anniversary. The Final Fantasy XV director has left Square Enix to form a brand new studio.

I was able to gain so much experience with my time at Square Enix. Every title I was able to a part of means a lot to me. However, FFXV stood out from the group as it was a special project for me which I went all in. Therefore, I decided to take this opportunity to officially announced my departure from FFXV to all the fans who have supported the title across the globe
Hajime Tabata also thanked loyal fans for their support.
I honestly believe the reason we were able to get this far is because of all you loyal fans. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I have a project that I truly wish to solidify as my next challenge after FFXV. For that reason, I have decided to leave my current position and start my own business in order to achieve my goal.
From this day on, I will cheer on and support Square Enix and Luminous Productions together with all you fans. I would like to thank everyone who continues to support FFXV and those who have also supported myself personally.
Tabata’s departure also brings a halt to the development of three of the four DLC packs that were planned for release in 2019. Only the first one, Episode Ardyn, is still in development, and it will release during March 2019.
Thankfully, it’s not just bad news today. Square Enix confirmed that The Comrades Multiplayer Expansion standalone release is coming next month, on December 13th. It will include 10 new bosses, new costumes and weapons. All those who already purchased it will get the new version for free.
Final Fantasy XV is now available on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in all regions.
