Back in 2015, Google promised free photo and video uploads from your phone as long as you let Google compress your data a bit. The company is making a slight change to that program now. As of December 6th, videos in unsupported formats are no longer included in the free storage deal. The Google Support page has been updated with a list of files that are no longer supported under the ‘free storage’ program. Considering that Google Photos supports almost any video format one can imagine, it is reasonable to assume that a few of them might be a tad cumbersome to store. The supported file formats are as follows:
.mpg, .mod, .mmv, .tod, .wmv, .asf, .avi, .divx, .mov, .m4v, .3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .m2t, .m2ts, .mts, and .mkv files.
All other file types listed on the support page are mostly unique ones that come from specific hardware. Those will take up storage space going forward. Another reason for the change could be due to users attempting to make large, non-video files look like videos. It may have counted as free storage in the past but no more. The other criteria for files remain the same. You still can’t upload photos larger than 75 MB or 100MP, videos larger than 10GB and images with a resolution lesser than 256×256.
