The Huawei Nova 4 is the first device from the Chinese giant to feature a punch-hole camera display like the Galaxy A8s. What started with a notch from phone makers to increase the smartphone screen real estate was quickly followed by the teardrop notch and now, we’re greeted with an in-display camera to maximize that screen-to-body ratio. Currently, the technology where the front camera and other components can be completely hidden beneath the display does not exist but we won’t be surprised if the first devices bearing such a design will come up in the next couple of years.
Huawei Nova 4 Features a Triple Camera and a Whopping 8GB RAM
The Nova 4 touts a large 6.4-inch IPS LCD screen with a 2,310 x 1,080 resolution. With an in-display camera at the front side, Huawei can afford to increase the screen size of its handsets without worrying too much about the footprint of the phone. Armed with a Kirin 970, the Nova 4 will not be able to deliver the same performance as the Mate 20 series, but it will still be sufficient for most users.

There’s also a rear-mounted fingerprint reader, revealing that the device will not sport that in-screen scanner. Supplementing the performance of the Kirin 970 is 8GB RAM and you get 128GB of internal storage. Apart from the in-display front-facing camera, the highlight of the Huawei Nova 4 is its triple rear camera setup. The primary sensor is a 48MP shooter, followed by a secondary 20MP unit. We think that this is going to be a monochrome lens like the one on the P20 Pro.
The last sensor will most likely be used for depth-sensing. Unfortunately, in an era of quadruple camera smartphones, it is disappointing that Huawei did not incorporate a telephoto lens on the Nova 4. The company is aggressively pushing the boundaries of smartphone photography as it aims to launch a smartphone in 2019 bearing four cameras paired with 10x optical zoom, so it is unfortunate that the OEM ignored lossless zoom when launching the Nova 4.
The battery capacity is also small for its size; a 3,750mAh cell resides under that premium chassis, with the device getting 18-watt fast-charging support. With the smartphone officially launched in China for 3,099 Yuan (approximately $449.2), Huawei could most likely release it in Europe and India. The Nova 4 will most likely not be making its way to the U.S., but that does not mean other devices from the company will not be launched in this region.
If you’re waiting for a more powerful unit to arrive, Huawei’s sub-brand Honor is preparing the View 20, and it’s expected to be powered by the Kirin 980.
