Huawei Said to Be Working on a Kirin 1020 SoC – 2x Performance of Kirin 970 and Might Compete Against the Snapdragon 1000

The latest development from Huawei’s chip manufacturing division, HiSilicon has introduced a revelation pointing towards the workings of an even more powerful chipset than the Kirin 980, called the Kirin 1020. Apparently, the Chinese giant wants to gain the upper hand in the performance market against Qualcomm and as the rumor states, it will be able to deliver twice the performance of the Kirin 970, which is a SoC found in devices like the P20 Pro.

The 4-Digit Model Name of Kirin 1020 Signifies That it Could Take on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 1000

Though the Kirin 970 is a powerful silicon for smartphones, it is still incapable of thwarting the Snapdragon 845, which is found in the majority of the flagships. GSMArena managed to get a hold of the news that Huawei is planning to introduce its Kirin 1020 in the future and from the looks of it, we have a feeling that it is going to be taking on the upcoming Snapdragon 1000. Though we want you to take this with a pinch of salt, let us explain why we believe this chipset will be taking on the Snapdragon 1000.

Earlier, Huawei was rumored to be working on the Kirin 710 to take on the Snapdragon 710 and compete against the high-end, but affordable smartphone market. Similarly, either Huawei has run out of numbers to choose the correct model name for the upcoming Kirin 1020, or the 4-digit designation means that the company is ready to kick its research and developing in the fifth gear and really make trouble for Qualcomm in the future.

According to the performance of the Kirin 1020, it is said to be twice as fast as the Kirin 970, so this can signify that the upcoming SoC might be found in upcoming notebooks and feature a higher TDP than the chipset’s TDP running in smartphones. However, for this to work, Huawei will also have to cozy up to Microsoft and in the end, encourage developers to recompile apps to work on computing machines being fueled by that silicon.

At this stage, these are just speculations and additional information will be provided later in the year. What do you think the Kirin 1020’s primary use will be for? Tell us down in the comments.
