Intel has finally unleashed their 3D Xpoint based Optane SSDs for the mainstream consumer market in the form of the Optane SSD 800p series. The Optane SSDs, not to be mistaken with Intel’s Optane memory, enables fast system boot and speedy application load times compared to conventional hard drives and SATA based SSDs.
Intel SSD 8 Series Launch as Optane SSD 800p – Available in 58 and 118 GB Capacities For $129 and $199 US
Intel Optane SSD 800p series expands the 3D Xpoint ‘Optane’ family which has already seen a few products. Primarily aimed at extreme users such as HEDT enthusiasts in the form of SSD 900p and Datacenter users in the form of the SSD DC P4800X, the Optane technology is finally making way in to mainstream consumers platforms.

Today’s launch includes two models, a 58 GB and 116 GB, both priced at $129 US and $199 US, respectively. Intel is aiming these SSDs at mainstream consumer PCs to enable a good boost over conventional storage devices such as hard drives and SATA based SSDs. Though, the SSDs don’t match the competitiveness of GB per dollar compared to those, the speeds are a wide fraction ahead and useful for users who want to update their older storage devices or use these as the primary OS storage device.
Intel is marketing the drives to be used as both standalone or in a multiple SSD RAID configuration which would only be possible on the latest platforms (aka 200 / 300 series).
Intel Optane SSD 800P enables fast system boot, speedy application load times and smooth multitasking. It is ideal for use as a standalone SSD, in a dual drive setup or in a multiple SSD RAID configuration (PCH-based or CPU-based), offering performance and flexibility to users. The drive also supports lower-power states, allowing it to operate in devices like laptops and 2 in 1 devices, as well as desktop systems. The 800P excels with low queue depth random workloads, where most client system activity takes place, and offers uncompromising responsiveness and throughput. The 800P is available in 58GB and 118GB capacities in the M.2 2280 form factor using an NVMe PCIe 3.0 x2 interface. via Intel
