iPhone SE 2 Specs & More Laid Bare by Japanese Publication – No 3.5mm Jack, With Touch ID and Newer SoC Technology

We finally have some concrete information related to the successor of the iPhone SE, or the iPhone SE 2. According to a Japanese publication, the smartphone is expected to maintain the same screen as its predecessor, but get a whole lot of changes on the inside.

iPhone SE 2 Launch Date Set for the Month of May but Without the 3.5mm Headphone Jack Sadly

Speaking to the representatives from the website Mac Otakara at the Global Sources Mobile Electronics trade show in Hong Kong, case makers revealed that the next generation of iPhone SE, or the iPhone SE 2 will be launched in May. The updated iPhone SE will be the same size as the previous generation and will also retain the Touch ID fingerprint reader. This means the iPhone SE 2 will have a 4-inch screen.

The case makers do not think that the phone will keep the 3.5mm headphone jack. The phone will be powered by Apple’s A10 Fusion chip and that is nearly 40 percent faster than the chip that powers the current iPhone SE, the A9 SoC. The A10 Fusion chip is also expected to support the HEVC video compression standard and the HEIF image format.

The upcoming iPhone SE might have a glass back with support for wireless charging. Apple had filed various unreleased iPhone models with the European regulation authority earliest this week, sparking fresh speculations that a new iPhone SE 2 will be released the next month as filings are usually followed by product launches.

The internet has been replete with iPhone SE rumors in recent months. The Chinese website QQ.com reported that the new iPhone SE will have a 4.2 inch screen, A10 Fusion chip, 2GB of RAM, Touch ID, and metal frame and back. The report claimed that there will be two variants of the phone, 32GB and 128GB, with the handset expected to retail at $349.

Ming-Chi Kuo, KGI Securities analyst, had recently said that he had doubts that the iPhone SE 2 will be launched in the second quarter of this year. If Apple does have such a phone in the pipeline, Kuo thinks there will only be a few upgrades. He thinks it will have a faster processor and a cheaper price tag, and the chances of it having iPhone X style features are slim.

The first generation iPhone SE was launched in March 2016. The storage capacities were doubled to 64GB and 128GB in March 2017, but we haven’t seen a successor since then. The phones starting price was also cut down to $349 last year.
