JDI Announces 1001 PPI LCD Designed for VR, A Likely Candidate for PlayStation VR’s Successor

Japan Display Inc (JDI), a leading manufacturer of small and medium-sized LTPS LCD panels, was formed a few years ago through the consolidation of the display panel businesses of Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi.

Yesterday, JDI announced the development of a 3.25 inch LTPS TFT-LCD panel designed specifically for VR applications. This panel will have 1001 pixel per inch (PPI), an upgrade from the 803 PPI panel JDI had talked about last year. The new panel will be smaller, have higher resolution, higher refresh rate (120Hz vs 90Hz) and even have better latency.

This new 1001 PPI panel will be showcased in JDI’s booth #917 at The Society of Information Display (SID) “Display Week“, at the Los Angeles Convention Center, May 22 – May 24, 2018, in Los Angeles, California, USA.

JDI expects to start commercial shipments by the end of March 2019 and remarked in the press release that the long-term goal is to accelerate the production of even higher resolution displays for VR and HMD applications.

Now, this is particularly interesting because it could very well be the panel Sony is going to use for the next big hardware revision of its PlayStation VR HMD. This would represent a tremendous technological leap compared to the current PlayStation VR, which is stuck at a mere 386 PPI.

Chances are a new PlayStation VR could appear alongside PlayStation 5 in 2020.
