Soon, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will go on sale in many countries around the world, and several people who pre-order the device already have it in their possession. Following their recent Oreo rollout debacle of the S8 and S8+, Samsung seems to have upped their update game and is rolling one out for the S9, merely days after its release. The update has been rolled out in Germany at the moment and should be making its way to other markets in the coming days. The update in itself is a minor one, weighing in at merely at 242 MB. Most notably, it brings the March 2018 security patch. The build number is G960FXXU1ARC5 and G965FXXU1ARC5 for the S9 and S9+ respectively.
Hopefully, the first Galaxy S9 update will fix some of the bugs encountered on the pre-final software on some review units. The changelog is a generic one that doesn’t specify any particular improvements or features. The highlighted features such as the AR Emoji and Bixby Translate are in a horrible state and need of a fix. We can only hope there is one lined up for future updates. Right now, though, the latest security fixes seem to be the focus. The March 2018 patch fixes nine critical Android vulnerabilities and five exclusive to Samsung’s software. The first Samsung device to receive it was the Galaxy A8 (2018), earlier this week, followed by the Galaxy S8 and S8+.

The latest update can be downloaded from the Settings » Software update menu on an S9 or S9+ if you want it OTA, or the update should soon be available via Samsung Smart Switch. It’s uncharacteristic of a newly released device to receive an update immediately after release, but in this case, it isn’t a bad thing. Samsung has been falling asleep at the wheel for far too long when it comes to timely update delivery, and it’s high time they got their act together.
