The first performance preview of NVIDIA’s recently announced GeForce RTX 2080 Ti graphics card has been revealed by Techradar. The folks over at Techradar managed to post their early GeForce RTX 2080 Ti performance impressions that they managed to play with during the Gamescom 2018 event and according to them, the RTX 2080 Ti looks to be the first graphics card that will be able to play 4K games with ease.

While Techradar calls their article a review, we know they might have been a little too excited to be the first ones to get out the performance impressions of the new cards. Regardless of what they call it, it was very important that someone talked about the graphics performance of these cards whether they were in NDA or not and I will explain why later in this article.

Coming straight to the performance segment, the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti is said to deliver smooth 60 FPS in multiple PC games at 4K resolution. No detailed benchmarks were run as there are multiple NDA’s that tech writers are currently under with NVIDIA. All they can talk about is what they were able to play at the event without much messing around. In addition to the 4K gaming performance, it is also stated that some games (which they obviously can’t name explicitly) were able to run well over 100 FPS at 4K and using Ultra settings. Do mind the fact that these are reference cards so we are looking at least 90 MHz of overclocking over the reference or many custom models that will be available on retail on 20th September.
The only game that Techradar was able to mention is Shadow of the Tomb Raider which is an obvious one since NVIDIA had many PCs running the game, showcasing their real-time raytracing or RTX technology in action. We have multiple reports on the performance of the new cards with RTX enabled and the game ran at around 50-60 FPS on average on a single GPU. No resolution or settings are mentioned but other tech pubs are mentioning that the demo was running at 1080p resolution and performance isn’t that optimized yet.

Although we haven’t had the chance to benchmark the card thoroughly, we did get to play multiple PC games at 4K and in excess of 60 frames per second (fps) with the RTX 2080 Ti at Nvidia’s GeForce Gaming Celebration event at Gamescom 2018.
In terms of frame rate, Shadow of the Tomb Raider ran at a mostly consistent 50-57 fps, which is impressive giving the game is running on a single GPU and in such an early state – on top of all the new ray tracing techniques.
We also played a variety of other PC games that shall not be named, and saw performance run in excess of 100 fps at 4K and Ultra settings. Unfortunately, we also don’t know how much power these GPUs had to draw to reach this level of performance. via Techradar
You can also check out a detailed video of Shadow of the Tomb Raider running with RTX enabled on a single RTX 2080 Ti graphics card. The card was running a resolution of 1080p and managed around 30-40 FPS. The tradeoff in performance for extra graphical effects doesn’t impress that much as the performance is the bare minimum for most PC gamers.
Nevertheless, the developers themselves assured that RTX performance in final releases will be a surprise for everyone and we sure hope so as of right now, it doesn’t make for an impressive showcase for the new RTX 20 series cards.
However, Elenarie, a DICE developer currently working on Battlefield V and verified on ResetEra, chimed in to reassure worried fans about the performance NVIDIA RTX features will have in the final games.
“I think people will be surprised at how well this will run in their respective final releases. 🙂”
When pressed for more specifics regarding the performance that can be expected in Battlefield V, he replied that it’s too soon to talk about that.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 20 series launches today in reference variants first. This time, NVIDIA has already given the green light to their manufacturers to announce custom cards soon after the reference launch which are now available to pre-order on the official GeForce webpage. Ok so the RTX 2080 Ti performance is great, I am pre-ordering one!
Woah, just hold on there for a second. Yes, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti sounds awesome according to this preview but there are also other articles out there which clearly state that the early performance impressions of RTX games aren’t that great. NVIDIA solely talked about how good RTX is and how great it looks, they didn’t even slightly mention the performance of their latest cards (which to be honest are ludicrously price), neither in RTX titles or those without it.
I am as much enthusiastic about the new GeForce RTX 20 series lineup but I will give a thought or two in this case, based on the prices we will be paying before I buy one. The reason is that the performance is kept a complete mystery and most consumers paying well over a grand for the cards and these cards themselves may or may not fall on their expectations in regards to graphics performance.
Most of the cards are already out of stock on several retailers which show that they are very hot in demand and for someone who has been waiting for a year or more since the 10 series cards came, it makes sense for them to be grabbing them as fast as they can. But I’d advise the people who are still making up their minds to buy these cards to wait a bit more for the performance reviews to come forward and make things clear. Till then, do give it a thought, whether you should purchase a card worth over $1000 US without knowing how it would actually perform.
