We first got to see Android TV back in 2014, and since then several companies integrated the platform into their products. It has become a desired feature for smart TVs, and we’ve even seen many dedicated set-top boxes for it, including the NVIDIA Shield TV. The Shield TV was released three years ago and continues to receive updates. Nvidia announced that the Shield TV would begin receiving an update to Android Oreo starting today. Along with the latest version of Android, you’ll get a whole host of additional features, including an all-new UI.

The update bumps the software version to Shield Experience Upgrade 7.0, which comes with a new home screen that features separate rows of applications and games. Underneath is a “Play Next” row for a quick and easy way to continue the movie or TV show you were previously watching. The update also comes with a new “Channels” feature that allows apps to show up as individual rows (such as Netflix or Plex) with quick access to suggested media. You can even continue where you left off in TV shows, movies, and games by adding content to Play Next. For that, you need to navigate to the content and hold the Select button. It isn’t supported for all apps, though.
The update also brings in support for Arlo cameras, Emerson Sensi, Ikea Tadfri, LG smart appliances, and Scenes support for Phillips Hue. There are also several under the hood changes that include support for high polling rate gaming mice for NVIDIA GameStream, improved support for game controllers (such as Xbox 360 and DualShock 4), the ability to connect to WiFi without disconnecting the ethernet connection, and an upgrade to the May security patch. You should expect to see the OTA hit your device in the coming week, so keep your eyes peeled.
