NVIDIA Teases GeForce RTX Series Graphics Cards Launching At Gamescom

This is going to be a short but interesting one – NVIDIA has just uploaded its teaser of the upcoming GeForce RTX Series Graphics Cards  (we don’t know what the final suffix is at the moment, or even that the RTX prefix is final, but let’s roll with RTX 2000 series for now). The GeForce RTX 2080 and 2070 should be among the cards that are launched on August 20 at Gamescom according to the snippy teaser uploaded by the company.

NVIDIA teases launch of flagship Turing GPU based GeForce RTX lineup at Gamescom, 20th August – is this the GeForce RTX 2080?

You can check out the teaser uploaded just moments after their SIGGRAPH 18 event ended over here:

Unfortunately, there’s not much we can make out from the video. The GPU that the person takes out from the box appears to be a standard Pascal graphics card shroud and the GPU in the casing appears to be the Star Wars flavored TITAN GPU that we have seen quite often. The real tease happens in the ending moments of the videos where flashes and snippets of the upcoming design are shown, ending in a statement calling everyone to Cologne, Gamescom.

The teaser seems to indicate the following:

  • a new cooler.
  • a new backplate design.
  • liquid cooling?

We do have two things confirmed now: The GeForce RTX 2080 / 2070 (or whatever they are called) will be using the Turing architecture and the naming scheme of the cards (at least some of them) is going to be RTX. The RTX nomenclature would make a lot of sense for the flagship considering the fact that the new architecture contains ray tracing cores which could allow NVIDIA GPUs to run intensive raytraced effects inside games (which would be NVIDIA exclusive naturally). Considering AMD has no such alternative in their graphics card for the moment, they would take a pretty hefty performance penalty for these (if they run at all).

The RTX push is one of the most ambitious initiatives that we can think of from a graphics card company and we couldn’t be more excited to hear it. While it is clear that we won’t be seeing 4k 60 fully ray-traced scenes out of the box, this is definitely a step in the right direction and a fully raytraced game is finally within spitting distance (think 1 or 2 more generations from NV). The GeForce RTX 2080 and GeForce RTX 2070  (or the RTX 1180 for that matter) will be the crown jewel of NVIDIA’s lineup.

This also further lends credence to our story that the company is pursuing the RTX series as complementary to the GTX series and will add on top of the Pascal lineup and not replace them for now. It is even possible the company goes for a hybrid launch with both RTX and GTX graphics cards – but that, of course, is pure speculation on my part.
