The in-display fingerprint technology is still relatively new and not only does it need time to mature, the costs are also relatively high right now. To dial down that price, most manufacturers opt for optical fingerprint readers and OnePlus is going to do the same with its OnePlus 6T.
OnePlus 6T Optical Fingerprint Scanner Not Expected to Create Problems, Though Ultrasonic Scanners Are Far Superior
Basically, there are two types of in-display fingerprint sensors that you should know about. First is the ultrasonic one which is expensive but more accurate. The one developed by Qualcomm can function accurately through displays being up to 800 microns thick, which is a huge improvement over the previous generations that could work accurately only up to 300 microns. Though it sounds good, most manufacturers shy away from it to employ some cost savings.

The only other alternative is the optical fingerprint reader, which was seen on the Vivo NEX. OnePlus has confirmed that it will also embed the optical one beneath the Optic AMOLED screen of the OnePlus 6T. Optical fingerprint scanners are more affordable and more readily available. Moreover, they are pretty reliable too. The Chinese manufacturer Gudix usually supplies the optical variety to most OEMs and is currently the top choice for most smartphone manufacturers.
Rest assured, the optical variety will also work reasonably well and you are not expected to experience any difficulties while unlocking your OnePlus 6T. It would just work fine even if you put the glass protector on top of the screen. However, optical fingerprint readers are just a little bit slower and less accurate than their superior ultrasonic counterparts, but that would hopefully be hardly noticeable.

At this stage, the phones that are coming out with an in-display fingerprint scanner are a novelty as the technology isn’t mainstream yet, so we don’t think the majority of consumers would bat an eyelash about the type of in-screen fingerprint scanner that is inside the OnePlus 6T. However, most consumers are not going to be pleased that the manufacturer opted to remove the 3.5mm headphone jack just to add a slightly larger 3,700mAh battery.
