Qualcomm revealed the QTM052 millimetre (mmWave) antenna module and the QPM56xx sub-6 GHz RF module today. The company says that these are the world’s first fully-integrated sub-6 GHz RF and 5G NR wave mmWave modules specifically made for smartphones of the future. The chip manufacturer said these modules are a direct solution to one of the problems related to 5G deployment, although the company didn’t say when the modules will start showing up in devices. However, there is confirmation that samples are already being sent out to Qualcomm’s clients.
It has become apparent in the last few months that 5G will rely heavily on mmWave to facilitate the bandwidth requirements which are expected with 5G connectivity. Even though the mmWave can assist with greater data loads, it is vulnerable to problems such as propagation loss and blocked signals. Qualcomm believes that the QTM052 mmWave antenna module will resolve most of these issues and make the deployment of 5G easier. With the use of beam-based technologies, QTM052 can target and receive mmWave signals more efficiently.

Moreover, QTM052 comprises all the 5G-related processing, transcending, and management solutions required to deal with the signal. It is also compatible with Qualcomm’s 5G modem, the Snapdragon X50, which is said to debut with the 7nm FinFET-made Snapdragon 855. This makes the QTM052 the missing 5G puzzle for smartphones.
Even though the sub-6GHz spectrum is less abundantly available than the mmWave, it is less susceptible to the same environmental issues and can be used to fill in the gaps left by mmWave. That’s why the QPM56xx sub-6GHz RF module comes is a great fix for 5G. The QPM56xx sub-6GHz RF module is compatible with the Snapdragon X50 modem too and can offer the same benefits provided by the QTM052 mmWave antenna module.
The issues highlighted above are related to 5G and are not specific to handsets, though. The modules presented by Qualcomm are important from a smartphone perspective because of their size. They are compact enough to fit in a device without affecting or compromising its design. Most manufacturers are likely to fit in at least two of these inside smartphones for optimal performance.

With this launch, Qualcomm is gearing up for the imminent arrival of 5G, though the first smartphone that is capable of 5G connectivity will still be arriving in 2019.
