Qualcomm had recently announced its new QTM052 millimetre wave and QPM56xx sub-6GHz radio frequency antenna module for first generation 5G phones and this release is expected to fix a major issue for smartphones.
Senior Vice President of engineering and technology at Qualcomm, Ma Dejia said that 5G will have a drastic impact on the lives of people. He said that 5G will obtain more milestones next year and that the current 5G first-stage standards have been completed, including independent networking (SA) and non-independent networking (NSA).

Qualcomm Might Make Dedicated AI Hardware by Next Year to Extend 5G Connectivity Growth
NSA refers to devices which can connect to both 4G and 5G networks. They are easier to deploy and faster to implement. Since 4G networks already exist, 5G will only be added to it for joint networking. However, SA is also an ‘above satisfactory’ networking mode and doesn’t rely on 4G networks. Since its core network is 5G, it will offer more advantages in terms of speed. Ma Deija believes that NSA will be deployed on a large scale next year but China is more interested in SA.
Senior director of Qualcomm’s global product market, Mike Roberts said that he expects OEMs to launch 5G smartphones during the first half of 2019. Roberts also thinks the United States and South Korea will be the first countries to launch 5G connectivity. Qualcomm wants to release 5G equipment as early as possible but this requires other aspects such as operators, OEMs, and operators to be prepared. In 2016, Qualcomm launched the world’s first 5G-enabled modem, the Snapdragon X50. Reportedly, 20 equipment manufacturers and 18 operators are planning to use the chip in their devices next year.
Apart from 5G, Qualcomm is also interested in the field of artificial intelligence strategy. Gary Brotman, Qualcomm’s product management director said that 5G will facilitate the sharing of AI processing on two devices. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 mobile platform was the first chipset optimized to the terminal side of the AI algorithm. Brotman also believes that 5G will provide new opportunities to extend artificial intelligence to the edge of wireless networks.

He also revealed that the company may make dedicated AI hardware in the future, which we believe will once again benefit the growth of 5G and computing of the future.
