Well, it has happened, and was going to eventually. watchOS 5 will not be available for the original Apple Watch; this also includes the insanely expensive Edition models from that era.
Orignal Apple Watch Users Won’t be Able to Download watchOS 5
watchOS 5 packs a lot of cool features, and you can learn all about them here. It has so many features in fact that they might not even work on older hardware. Which hardware are we talking about? Well, the original Apple Watch to be more precise. If you have a Series 1, Series 2 or Series 3 Watch then you will receive the update later this year in the fall.

Here are Apple’s subtle words on it:
watchOS 5 will be available this fall as a free update for Apple Watch Series 1 and later and requires iPhone 5s or later on iOS 12. watchOS 5 will not be available on the original Apple Watch. Features are subject to change. Some features may not be available in all regions.
While Apple hasn’t mentioned it in its literature, but the Apple Watch Edition (original one) won’t be getting watchOS 5 either since it shares the exact same hardware as normal Series 0 models. So if you spent $17,000, you might wanna consider upgrading right about now if you are planning to enjoy the new features announced by Apple.
Personally speaking, I would highly recommend upgrading from the aging, original Apple Watch model. Not only it’s slow, thanks to its measly single-core CPU, but it lacks a lot of features already which are available on Series 1 and above. Now that Apple has dropped support for watchOS updates, you might wanna act fast if you wanna use your Apple Watch as a walkie-talkie or not.
