Some weedy-eyed redditors found out that HP apparently has a lot of documentation available publicly that lists a “GTX 1180” graphics card from NVIDIA. This is not the first time I am hearing of this card but considering this is *still* circumstantial evidence, this post has been tagged as a rumor. In other words, please use copious amounts of salt while perusing this article. I will say right off the bat that it’s possible that this is an OEM-only product or even a plain ol’ typo (although I would personally term that increasingly unlikely considering the volume of documentation around this).
NVIDIA GTX 1180 Spotted In HP Documentation – Typo Or New Non-RTX Card?
To arrive at the various pamphlets and material about this card, you can Google “HP Obelisk GTX 1180” and there isn’t one but multiple instances of this card on the internet. I did some simple searches and even found it listed in a different, higher end, obelisk system at an e-tailer online. Now there are two major possibilities here: either this is a mistake in the form of a typo/just documentation that was not updated after the RTX nomenclature was revealed OR this is a non-RTX card from NVIDIA the likes of the GTX 1660.
Let’s start with the less interesting explanation: this is simply an instance of partners forgetting to change the nomenclature from the pre-release branding to the new one. The one evidence that lends credence to this is the fact that the GTX 1180 does not make sense from a nomenclature point of view. A GTX 1680 or similar naming scheme would make more sense and be in-line with the GTX 1660. That said, it could very easily be a place holder for the eventual 1680 as well. There is very little evidence either way so might as well move on to the more exciting option.
It’s possible that this is an upcoming non-RTX non-Tensor card (like the 1660) leaking out. Now according to both the etailer listing I found and the HP documentation, the GTX 1180 has 8GB of vRAM. Now here’s the thing, the GTX 1660 is essentially an RTX 2060 with the tensor and RTX cores disabled via hardware straps, so it would be very easy for NVIDIA to do the same with the 2080 (although it makes less sense from a yield perspective for a die as big as the 2080) should it want to.
This story is further corroborated by the fact that benchmarks of a “GTX 1180” were spotted at GFXbench earlier this year which showed the software recognizing the card as a 2080. This also makes sense because just as the 1160 uses the same board number as the 2060 I would expect the 1180 to be nothing more than a 2080 die with the RTX and tensor disabled via hardware straps and benchmark software could easily confuse it with a 2080.
Regardless of whether this turns out to be true or not, I am all in the favor of a cheaper GTX 1180 offering from the company that would allow it to get back in the good graces of gamers worldwide. The revenue of the company took a big hit this quarter and while cryptocurrencies are certainly to blame, part of the reason is the lack of traction of RTX due to very high pricing right now. An “1180” would effectively cut through that problem and might actually help out with binning as well.
