In a bid to increase the total screen-to-body ratio, a lot of manufacturers have adopted the iPhone X style notches, while others have opted for pop-up cameras. Samsung seems to be a fan of neither and is apparently developing a solution which helps to obscure the sensors and eliminate bezels in the process.
Samsung Reportedly Bringing This Technology to Mobile Devices in 2020
The South Korean behemoth apparently hosted an ‘AMOLED Forum’ at the Shenzhen Marriott Hotel in China that was attended by nearly 20 people. The company talked about going beyond in-display fingerprint scanners to leverage the display to incorporate more features such as under-screen cameras, screen sound technology, and touch-sensitive technology. When accessing the front camera, the display would become transparent, but it would continue to function normally otherwise.

Using visual sensors beneath the camera would eliminate the need for notches and sliding mechanisms. Notches are just a ‘band-aid’ solution and some people even find them ugly, myself included. Similarly, pop-up cameras might not be suitable for long-term use because of durability issues. That’s why ‘under the screen’ cameras seem like a logical alternative.

Samsung has apparently already started testing the technology but it is unlikely that the company is ready to commercialize it any time soon. That is why we don’t think that it will make it to the upcoming Galaxy S10. According to a leak, the earliest we might see this technology is 2020. However, DJ Koh had earlier said that the Samsung Galaxy S10 will get a significant change, so Samsung might just surprise us if we’re lucky.

Either way, in-display cameras seem to be the future of smartphones and since Samsung has already made a prototype, it shouldn’t take too long for such a device to make a debut in the near future. Let us hope that the Korean giant’s foldable handset gets showcased as early as possible.
