Snapchat might be on a downward spiral over the past year, but that hasn’t stopped its parent company—Snap Inc—from diversifying their portfolio. Today, the company announced the launch of its gaming integration for the social app called Snap Games. The store is accessible from within the Snapchat app via the Chat bar. You can play games and chat with your friends at the same time. Separate installation of the games is not required. Here are some of the titles that are currently available.
- Bitmoji Party
- Tiny Royale – Zynga
- Snake Squad – Game Closure
- C.A.T.S. Drift Race – ZeptoLab
- Zombie Rescue Squad – PikPok
- Alphabear Hustle – Spry Fox
Snap Inc has wanted to break into the mobile gaming space for quite some time. Recently, Tencent managed to get their hands on 145.8m of Snap Inc’s shares, which amounts to a sizable 12% stake in the company. Tencent is arguably one of the biggest names in the gaming industry and is responsible for the likes of the massively popular PUBG Mobile and a host of other titles. Using Snapchat’s reach and Tencent’s expertise in the mobile gaming space, Snap Inc has the potential to make a mark on the market.
Snap Inc also acquired British VR and software startup PlayCanvas, which is best known for an open-source engine that powers Facebook and browser games. The engine can also power virtual reality experiences for browsers. It is based on HTML5 and WebGL and has previously been adopted by King, Disney, and Nickelodeon.
The mobile gaming space is a hotly contested one, and it’ll become even more so with Snap Inc dipping its toes in it. With Tencent in on the action, we can certainly expect to see more titles show up on Snapchat.
