Snapdragon 8150 Will Balance Performance And Power Suggest Critical Details

We’ve got only a few days left before Qualcomm launches the Snapdragon 8150. The processor will be the company’s first 7nm chip, as it looks to gain lost ground. The company’s previous two high-end chipsets have not performed spectacularly. In fact, it’d be fair to argue that Qualcomm hasn’t completely utilized ARM’s core designs when we talk about computing. With 7nm from TSMC official, the company will make a change to its high-end Snapdragon processor lineup. Take a look below for more details.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8150 Will Feature Eight Cores, With Only One Capable Of Achieving Maximum 2.84GHz Frequency

2018 seems to be the year of change. Not only are we hearing consistent rumors for big upgrades on Samsung’s Galaxy S10 lineup, but Qualcomm will also try its best to keep up with recent developments for ARM64. Not only has ARM made the Cortex A76 official, but Apple’s A12X continues to perform above par for a mobile processor.

Therefore, all eyes are on Qualcomm, and now we’ve got some news on how the company might keep up with the rest. A leak from China has details for the Snapdragon 8150’s core cluster count and arrangement.

Courtesy of China, today’s report claims that the Snapdragon 8150 will three core ‘clusters’. These will consist of Kryo Gold Prime, Kryo Gold and Kryo Silver cores. The Kryo Gold Prime cluster will consist of only one core which will feature 512KB L2 cache and will be clocked at 2.8GHz. The Kryo Gold cluster will have three cores, with 256KB L2 cache and a 2.4GHz frequency. Finally, the low power core cluster will be clocked at 128KB L2 cache and 1.78GHz frequency.

This approach will ensure that the Snapdragon 8150 uses only one core when computing workloads with heft processing requirements. Qualcomm is refusing to budge on power consumption with the Snapdragon 8150 according to today’s information. We’ll agree with this approach, but the main show stopper for the Snapdragon 8150 will be its GPU. Future flagships, especially the Galaxy S10 lineup will have a strong focus on AR, and a strong GPU+NPU combination is necessary to deliver in this segment.
