Sony Exmor IMX607 Details Allegedly Leaked – Can Give Huawei’s Quad-Camera Flagship & Pixel 4 Improved Low-Light Photography

Sony’s smartphone division might be underperforming, the Japanese manufacturer is a market leader when it comes to image sensors. Back in summer, Sony unveiled the IMX586 stacked CMOS image sensor that can capture 48MP photos. Now according to a new leak, the company is supposedly working on a new 38MP 1/1.8-inch IMX607 sensor. After reading about the features, this sensor will most likely be found in high-end flagships of 2019.

Sony IMX607 Sensor Is Optimized for Low-Light Photography

The upcoming sensor will apparently work in the same way as the IMX600, but it will also add an array of white pixels to the existing RGB ones. The Dual Bayer technology will be used with a white HDR Coding array. Although complete details are not known, it is being alleged that like the Sony IMX600, the IMX586 will use two color pixels for long exposure and two for short exposure and combine them for improved dynamic range.

Apparently, the camera will leverage the white pixels to capture more light and get better detail and sharpness without using an additional black and white sensor. This could greatly improve photography in dimly lit areas. For a better and faster autofocus, the sensor will feature Quad Pixel Phase Detection Auto Focus (QPDAF). Apart from that, the sensor will feature high-SNR pixel binning readout function, advanced noise reduction, dual sensor synchronization operation, and built-in ambient light and temperature sensors.

The sensor has apparently been designed especially for night time photography and can be used for smartphones, tablet, and PC camera. Needless to say, it might be seen in many 2019 flagships, such as Google’s Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, to improve low-light photography extensively. However, since Sony hasn’t officially said anything, it’s best to take this report with a pinch of salt.

In a recent interview with Huawei’s executive, it was detailed that the Chinese OEM will be introducing a camera with four lenses at the back to significantly increase camera quality. The Mate 20 Pro is the first in the business without a retractable camera, and it is still able to capture images with a 5x optical (lossless) zoom. We could see something similar in 2019, so stay tuned for more updates regarding this industry.
