As has become tradition the past couple years Sega held a Sonic the Hedgehog panel at SXSW, which featured new information about Team Sonic Racing and the future of the franchise. Focusing first on Team Sonic Racing, we got a new trailer showing off the game’s kart customization – you’ll be able to choose parts, paints, decals, and more. It’s not exactly Gran Turismo, but the customization actually looks pretty deep for far a kart racer. Check out the trailer, below.
Overall, it looks like the delay from holiday 2018 to May 2019 has done Team Sonic Racing some good. The game I played back at E3 2018 felt kind of sluggish and unimpressive, but the latest round of footage looks faster and more fun. You can watch some new gameplay, below.

Sega also revealed they’ll be doing another animated series for Team Sonic Racing. The series will be directed by Tyson Hesse and Neko Productions, who produced the well-received Sonic Mania Adventures web series. Here’s the first episode of Team Sonic Racing Overdrive.
Haven’t been keeping up with Team Sonic Racing? Here’s the official description:
Developed by Sumo Digital, Team Sonic Racing is the ultimate arcade and fast-paced competitive style racing experience, featuring your favorite characters and environments from across the Sonic Universe. Race together and win together in online multiplayer or local co-op mode in dynamic teams of three and utilize deep vehicle customization features to dash across the finish line.
Oh, and one extra tidbit – at the SXSW panel, Sonic boss Takashi Iizuka confirmed that next core entry in the Sonic the Hedgehog series is in the works. He didn’t provide any additional details, but I quite liked Sonic Team’s last game, and of course, everybody loved Sonic Mania, so there’s reason to be excited for the hedgehog’s next big adventure.
Team Sonic Racing peels onto PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch on May 21.
