Apple made a major move with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Under the mantra of ‘courage’, the company removed direct 3.5mm earphone support from the gadgets. At the same time, it also launched the AirPods, its first attempt at wireless earbuds.
The removal of the 3.5mm earphone jack on the iPhone 7 lineup helped Apple free up space for other internal components for the smartphone, by removing an old analog chip. Barclays Predicts That Apple Will Remove The Lightning-to-3.5mm Earphone Jack Adapter From The iPhone 9, iPhone Xs And iPhone Xs Plus
Despite a good four months left before they’re official, we’ve got a lot of information for Apple’s 2018 iPhone lineup. It’s expected that Cupertino will make slight changes to last year’s lineup, and launch all three devices with edge-to-edge notched displays. Furthermore, the iPhone X will see an iterative upgrade while the iPhone 8/iPhone 8 Plus will receive major form overhauls sufficient for a proper generational upgrade.
With that in mind, we’ve got a research note from Barclays today which follows current supply chain sentiment for this year’s iPhone trio. It’s expected that Apple will undertake major cost-cutting for at least one of the devices, namely the iPhone 9.
As opposed to the other two, this device will feature an LCD display. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple’s decision to use a Cover-Glass-Sensor LCD panel, combined with an additional sensor layer necessitated the removal of 3D Touch from the smartphone. If true, then this decision will add to Apple’s headache of making apps across the iPad and iPhone compatible with 3D Touch.

Today’s report from investment bank Barclays adds more detail to Apple’s design direction with this year’s iPhone lineup. Following in lieu with current cost-cutting sentiment in Cupertino’s supply chain, Barclays now believe that the iPhone 9, iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Plus will not ship with a lightning-to-3.5mm earphone dongle. Looks like Apple really, really hates everyday earphones.
Or, Cupertino might have run into problems with its audio component supplier, Cirrus Logic. Barclays’ note comes alongside the bank degrading Cirrus’ yearly and quarterly revenue guidance by 5%. Heading into Apple’s Q2 earnings call, it’s an interesting bit of news at least. At the moment, we can speculate that either Apple’s run into problems with Cirrus or Cupertino’s really eager to make the iPhone package as cheap as possible.
Whatever the case is, if true, then this move definitely won’t go down well with a lot of folks, especially those who don’t like to shell out some serious money for wireless headsets.
