The original Moto Z play was released all the way back in 2016 and came with Android Marshmallow 6.0 out of the box. Today, the Verizon edition of the device is receiving what will very likely be its last major software upgrade in the form of Android Oreo. Other variants of the device, including the carrier-unlocked one, had already received theirs some time ago. The Oreo update has a software version of ‘ODN27.76-12-30-2’ and has all the new features you would expect from Android 8.0. Picture-in-Picture mode for supported apps, the Autofill API, adaptive icons, notification badges, and the June 1, 2018 security patch level. While Samsung has managed to update most of their flagships to Oreo, a lot of compatible devices continue to run Nougat. For example, not a single Oreo update has been released for the budget Galaxy J series, despite being promised. According to sammobile, the Oreo update for the Galaxy J3 2017, Galaxy J5 Pro and Galaxy J7 Pro were “in the test phase” with a planned rollout from July 13. However, the Oreo release for these smartphones has been moved ahead to September 28, 2018, without any reason stated. Budget phones often end up with the short end of the stick and have to wait significantly longer than flagships, but September 2018 seems a bit too late. Android P will have been out by then and there’s no telling when the devices will get a taste of it.

Last year’s LG G6 is more or less caught up when it comes to running Oreo, but the same can’t be said for its predecessor, the LG G5. The device was promised an Oreo update along with the LG V20, but nothing has come of it so far. However, XDA Developers discovered that LG had posted the Oreo kernel sources for the Korean LG G5. This means the Oreo update should be rolling out soon to those devices and hopefully will follow suit.
