Xbox One and Microsoft Store PC Games Can All Be Digitally Gifted Now

It apparently took a while to work out the kinks, but Microsoft is finally giving digital gifting the full roll out. Back in mid-2017 Microsoft announced digital game gifting was coming to Xbox One, and they delivered on their promise later that year, but limitations on which games you could gift remained. Well, those restrictions are now gone, as you can now digitally gift all Xbox One and Microsoft Store PC games. Yup, that’s right, PC games have been invited to the gifting party!

I’m sure you tech-savvy folks don’t need instructions on how to send digital gifts, but here’s some instructions all the same:

  • Head over to the Microsoft Store on Windows 10, your Xbox One, or online, navigate to the product that you would like to purchase, select Buy as Gift, and enter the email address of the gift recipient. On Xbox One, you can choose a Gamertag from your list of Xbox Live friends.
  • The gift recipient will receive a code for their product along with instructions on how to redeem the code. On Xbox One, gift recipients will receive a system message with a clickable redemption button.
  • Gift purchasers can only buy two discounted products – and a total of 10 discounted products – every 14 days. There are no limits for gift purchases made at full price.
  • Gifting of Xbox 360 and Xbox original games, pre-orders, free products, and consumable downloadable game content such as virtual currency is not allowed.

Easy peasy! Steam has offered digital game gifting for years, but Microsoft is the first console maker to give their customers the option – Sony and Nintendo don’t let you send digital gifts. The misers! Perhaps Microsoft making the first move will prod their competitors to do the same.

I could definitely see digital gifting being useful for faraway friends and relatives I’m unlikely to see in person come Christmastime. What about you generous folks? Do you think you’ll take advantage of the option?
